What an hour of survival gaming costs your phone

Every review of a mobile game should carry a line about what it does to the battery, and almost none do. The reason is awkward: the honest answer depends on your phone, your screen brightness, your reception and the age of the cell inside it. A single number would be tidy and wrong.

What can be done instead is to describe the shape of the drain, and to show you how to measure it yourself in about an hour.

Where the power actually goes

Three things dominate, in this order: the screen, the radio, the processor. On a bright phone at full brightness, the display alone often outweighs everything the game does. That is why a stylised, low-contrast title can flatten a battery faster than a detailed one — brightness beats polygons.

The radio is second, and it explains why an online survival game costs more than a local one even when the graphics are simpler. A game that pings a server every few seconds keeps the modem awake; a game running from local files lets it idle.

The processor matters most in bursts — world generation, a busy fight, a large base rendering all at once. Sustained heat then makes it worse, because a warm phone throttles and takes longer to do the same work.

The four in this list, in shape rather than numbers

Terraria and Minecraft are the two heaviest here on a sustained basis, because they run a live world and invite long sessions. Both get noticeably warmer after twenty minutes with the graphics settings left on default.

Last Day on Earth sits in the middle for processing but high for radio: it is a connected game, and the connection never sleeps for long. Day R Survival is the lightest of the four by a clear margin — much of the time you are reading a menu, and the map draws once and then sits still.

Measure it yourself in an hour

Charge to full, then note the exact percentage. Set brightness to what you would actually use and leave it there. Play one uninterrupted session of thirty minutes, in the mode you normally play. Note the percentage again, then open Settings, Battery, and look at the per-app figure for that game.

Repeat the same thirty minutes in flight mode for the games that allow it. The gap between the two runs is the price of the network, and on some titles it is larger than the price of the graphics.

Two details make the result honest. Do it twice, on different days, because background app refresh and a warm room both skew a single run. And do not chase a friend's number: two phones of the same model with different battery health will disagree by a wide margin, and both readings can be correct.

Data, briefly

Local sandbox play uses almost none once installed. Connected survival games use a small trickle constantly rather than a large lump occasionally, which is why they show up in a monthly data summary out of proportion to how they feel. The single biggest cost is not play at all — it is updates, and those are worth restricting to Wi-Fi in the Play Store settings before a trip rather than after.

Settings worth changing once

  • Drop in-game resolution or render distance one step; on a phone screen the loss is hard to see and the heat difference is not.
  • Turn off background refresh for games you do not play daily.
  • Cap the frame rate if the game offers it — 30 fps is plenty for four of the five games most people play on a phone.
  • Set updates to Wi-Fi only, then check the app size before an update on a metered plan.

None of that turns a phone into a handheld console. It does mean the battery lasts the drive home.
